Today we want demand everything in an instant…

We want our food instantly…

We want our text messages read & returned instantly…

& we have to have wi-fi instantly! (We are livid if we can’t connect in .001 seconds)

Annnnnd it’d be nice to have success instantly too…

Although you’d love it, you realize success isn’t instant either…

but greatness is…

The moment you choose to do the things you need to do in order to be great…

& every moment thereafter.

Think about the people you idolized growing up…

Their results isn’t what made them great…they were great long before that because they chose to do whatever was necessary in order to be great…& each moment thereafter.

The results just confirmed their decisions & actions.

Wherever you find yourself today…

Bottomed out…in a ditch…busted up…broken…demoted…overweight…or just not where you’d like to be…

Be great instantly…& do whatever you need to do to be great …just for today….

& tomorrow, be/do great again.

Don’t focus on the results…just be great.

Because the results always lag behind….

& remember, when the results show, that doesn’t signify greatness …it merely confirms it.

Make today your New Year…

Instead of a 12 month goal (that you’ll likely quit on)…

Focus instead on a 12 week mission. Just for 12 weeks do great things.

When you fall…rise and choose to be great in the moment…

& @ the end of the 12 weeks, close the chapter and start a new 12 weeks. Each 12 week block is independent of the previous one.

The CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods said, “Professionally I’ve made a lot of mistakes…but I have few regrets…

…a mistake is something you can learn from & get better…a regret is something you can’t get back.”

As you sell today & make a life for yourself, when you come to the crossroads of: a) a Regret or b) a Mistake always choose “b”

Because you can learn from a mistake.

When your mind is yanking at you to pull back saying, “No, No, No! You may lose any hope for a sale!” -not asking for something that could change everything for you like setting an appointment, asking for the number, last name, address, or for their business…

ANYTHING…

🔥I’d rather risk hearing a “No” than live with the regret of possibly hearing a “Yes.”

At the end of a bad month you don’t replay all of the mistakes…you replay the regrets because you know there are things you should’ve done & said…but didn’t.

Even if you say it with the wrong tone…even if it doesn’t come across polished…even if you positioned it wrong…

You can learn, live, & grow from a mistake…

Or you can die professionally with a regret.

The recommitted always say, “I gotta go back to the basics…”

They hit the skids- tried everything else, only to realize it was the basics…the collected smalls that made you successful.

It’ll always be about the basics…compounded, but it’s still the basics.

The deceiving part is that you built up so much momentum that you feel you can stray away from the basics & still see success…& you can…for a while.

Leave early, come in late, skip today, & double up “tomorrow” become common themes…

& because those themes don’t have an immediate negative result, you try them again & again until you’re 4 miles from the path that lead to you success.

Your sales success dried up…you put 15 lbs back on “overnight,” your weekend getaways lead to crushing debt…

You left the basics & those tiny deviations eventually lead you way off course…

The good news is you left the basics…but the basics never left you.

They’re so small they’re just as easy to do as not to do…

So given the option, recommit to “do.”

Go to the basics…but keep in mind you won’t get instant results.

Stay with it…you have to build basic momentum again…compound it…and never leave it again.

General George Patton said, “Successful people make plans to fit the circumstances…they don’t try to fit circumstances into their plans…”

You PLANNED to get up early, get in shape, have a better sales month, be more productive at work, or work on your relationship…

& unforeseen circumstances arise & you say, “Wait! I didn’t plan for that!”

Confused & panicked, you furiously tryto fit the current circumstances into your already made plans.

& when the circumstances are unbendable, seemingly unmovable, you quit trying and revert back to your old ways.

Have a plan, but remain flexible, because circumstances will pop up- & most of it you didn’t plan for.

Make a new plan to fit the circumstances.

When I played college ball, we scripted the first 10 plays of the game…

Rarely did we roll out with 1 through 10. Field position & coverages, i.e. circumstances changed & we had to modify the plan.

Make a plan…work the plan…expect circumstances, & work a new plan to fit those new circumstances.

I was so excited about this book, I shelved the planned podcast episode in order to get this one out…

Today we’re jumping in on billionaire Tilman Fertitta’s book “Shut up & Listen!”

Fertitta is the owner of The Golden Nugget Casinos, over 600 restaurants including Morton’s Steakhouse, Landry’s Seafood, Saltgrass Steakhouse, & Rainforest Cafe to name a few…

Oh & he’s the owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

Obviously, there’s a reason Fertitta can tell you to shut up & listen.

He starts the book with, “There’s a paddle for everyone’s ass & you never know when it’s coming or where it’s coming from…

…the “paddle” is the force that’s taking square aim at your success & growth.”

Someone, somewhere is working to overtake you or knock you off your lead…so you better be the bull.

🔥Part of the reason the paddle finds your ass is because you’ve lost your hunger.

Hunger goes both ways…

In good times, you grow overconfident & complacent, thinking it’ll stay good forever…

Nothing stays the same. 🔥When it’s good, bad is on the way…🔥When it’s bad, good ain’t far off.

In good times keep your hunger by working with (Fertitta’s) “Poor Mindset” & “95/5 Rule” (my favorite).

& when it’s bad, keep your hunger.

In bad times it’s easy to accept that it’s too late, you’re outmatched, or have no options.

Not true…never stop fighting for options. “Until they padlock your front door” or you’re physically restrained, you still have options.

You just don’t see them because the only thing you see in your darkness is despair.

View your “problems” as challenges & you’ll find your silver linings.

Get the book…I’ll keep it with me and use as a reference guide.

was talking to a recent high school graduate who wants to go into the military…

but didn’t realize he had to prepare to take a test to get in…

With no more classes, freedom, & earning an hourly wage, he said he hadn’t 🔥gotten around to studying for it yet…

“Do you want to stay in this town & work to earn just enough money to eat Ramen noodles, drive a hooptie, and barely pay rent for the rest of your life?”

🔥Then you have to fight for your options…

Right now- whether you’re a recent graduate or are 30,40,50,60,70 years old…

You may be bankrupt, fired, or at a dead end today…

🔥Now may be all you have, but that’s not all there is…

Options aren’t given…they’re earned & you gotta fight for your options.

While others play…while the rest accept life as is…

You work to gain options…this is a solo decision…& if you want more, bigger, & better, then you have to work to elevate yourself in such away that you can afford to walk away, say No…or even say YES…

Because you have options 😉

What are you presenting today?

You may not be on a stage, but your world is your stage & every day you’re presenting…

The question is what are you presenting?

🔥Are you presenting how bad things are for you right now…how bad your month is going…how ill you are…how the administration has messed things up & the world is chaotically upside down?

What are you presenting?

🔥Because whatever you’re presenting is what you’re producing .

& every time you present, you give it fresh legs & new fire.

Stop presenting what you don’t want to produce.

I get that you have problems & unfairness…

Join the crowd…we’re all battling through something…

It may not be the same as yours but it damn sure rhymes.

Just produce…you got big shoulders…you can handle more than you think & go harder than you believe…

Focus less on presenting & more on producing.

& we don’t need to hear about it…we’ll see it in the effort & eventual results 💪

NBA legend Kobe Bryant said everything he did-EVERYTHING, was to become a better basketball player.

“Because I had that mindset, 🔥the world became my library..& because I knew what I wanted the world helped make that happen.”

So many people drift in life…

They don’t know what they want so it’s no wonder they’re barely getting by.

🔥When you know what you’re looking for & what you want, the world will help make that happen.

It’s not by accident…it’s by drive.

In #sales, confidence is everything…

But what about when you lose your confidence?

You put your confidence in the wrong thing…

You put your confidence in the customer or a specific outcome & when they bought elsewhere you got pissed off…which leads to less effort…which leads to eventually quitting.

“Buyers are liars…” right?

Nope…buyers aren’t liars…

They’re just not telling you everything…

Trust but verify…

Business owners hire independent auditors to verify what the business’ accountant is saying…

The IRS trusts your returns…

…but they will verify.

You lose your confidence- thinking “they’re all liars” because you trusted they were:

…6 months out

…wanted to shop around

…couldn’t get approved

Only to discover they bought somewhere else.

Trust…but verify.

Your body language & tone tell your customers you trust what they’re saying…

But your questions verify if it’s a stall or real objection.

It’s not that you don’t trust them…you just need to verify.
